I admittedly i don’t have that many coding client projects left these days but in the ones I’ve got left, most of the coders I work with have adopted LLMs
For what it’s worth, they do seem to understand much less, work much slower towards the project’s actual goals, with much more code, and at a lower quality
While asking sillier questions
But they think they’re working so much faster because the tools find the occasional bug and generates so much code
🤷🏻♂️
Why are Dems like this!?!??

About to start my fourth September in Europe. Everyone jokes about Europeans being hardcore out of the office during the summer, but what no one tells you is the godlike feeling of everyone replying to a month's worth of work emails in one day
@vaurora It’s our collective special skill 💪📤
Plus any mail that falls beyond the 1 day answer window is deemed unimportant and will never be answered.

I really feel like we had several prominent FOSS organizations fail us by not saying "hey hold on, don't use generative AI in FOSS projects, we're not sure what the legal, community, environmental implications of this are but there are serious problems and we have a history of taking a stand" and I worry that maybe we lost our moment to be principled, except in niche spaces, and the walls are closing in
And... I'm really sad about it. I think we're underestimating the amount of damage that's happening. :\
@cwebber I don't think it's necessary to ban AI tool usage outright. The approach taken in OpenSSL so far (a project I work on) is: (1) disclose AI usage, (2) "Do not submit output you have not read, understood and tested." The 2nd is the most important point. Self-review is not optional. You must be able to explain/defend any item in a diff you submit yourself. -- More details: https://openssl-library.org/policies/general/ai-policy/#:~:text=responsibility%20for%20it.-,Your%20Responsibility,-You%20are%20responsible #aicoding
I don't think you can put all else aside, but even just focusing on the maintainability of code itself...
Using these tools to uncover bugs, sure. Using them to generate code that nobody in your community fully understands... well...
And I know, you say, you'll be responsible about it.
But you won't be able to keep up, justifying keeping up with that level of review won't happen. So you'll slip. And you'll eventually embrace not knowing. And so is everyone else around you.
And so, decades of work are knotting up and the foundations are ensaring beneath our feet.
And we could have, collectively, organizationally, taken a stand, and we didn't.
@cwebber I wrote a whole piece touching on this.

Merci beaucoup ! 💖
I am moving, and every time I put a bag into the bag of bags I have intrusive thoughts about set theory. Does the bag of bags include itself?
@vaurora this is Russell's Paradox. For bags.
@lauren I never understood GAIA, Dasher, etc.; nor did I try to. Not that Google is the only one to get this wrong (note to programmers: locale != location != citizenship != preferred language(s)) - Bluesky sometimes thinks I'm in Texas when I'm in the UK and even when the GPS knows I'm in the UK; and I'm not even using a VPN.
@PeterLudemann "A maze of twisty passages, all different."
It's hard not to see the computer programming-related de-skilling caused by generative AI in the greater context of the decades-long general push away from computer literacy that I've been seeing as an educator
(With some exceptions, of course) I have to do a LOT more work than I used to, to get a student up to speed
@researchfairy I’ve seen it compared to how you used to have to be able to make your own car repairs to drive one, then it became a hobby, now it’s almost not possible to tinker with the machine.

@finner yep. There's some kind of bad actor detection going on but no specifics. I'm not using a VPN, just a regular mobile internet on a smartphone, so 🤷♂️
@timaeus Wieviel EUR oder kWh hat der Typ ausgegeben, um eine falsche BuPrä-Liste zu bekommen oder für "rebuild Windows"?!? War da ein einziges vernünftiges Beispiel?
